Lions are normally seen to live in a group called ‘Prides’. A pride can have any number of lions ranging from 3-30. A pride is mainly made of lioness, cubs and other few male lions. In some dry areas where there is scarce of food, the prides become smaller while there is enough food and water, prides have about 4 – 6 lioness. Actually living in prides make their life easier because they can hunt in group and probability of getting the food becomes more. Many animal experts those who has researched a lot on lions, said that some nature changes when a lion stays in pride. If any lion roars the whole pride will roar together at a time. Lions mainly hunt at night, with lioness doing all the work. It is proved that when a lion chase any animal, the speed is such that it will take about six seconds to cover up a football ground. The vision of lion is very powerful. Lion mainly hunt antelopes, baby elephants, insects, rodents, rhinos, reptiles and even crocodiles. Lions are also known to digest their food very quickly within a very short period of time.
Amazingly lions give birth to their babies in a secluded place away from their pride. Cubs remain hidden for four to six weeks till they learn to walk, gain strength and play with one another and their mother. After returning to the pride, they get nursed by all the lioness, not only their own mother. In fact the females in a pride give birth to their cubs in the same time. Under favorable conditions, lionesses give birth roughly every other year. At first these cubs follow their mother everywhere. At this time they start learning various things. After one year, mane starts growing around the neck of male cubs. Male cubs are made independent after two years while the females stay for a long time with their mother.
